Editor and Manager, Publications

LBBC seeks a highly motivated individual to serve as Editor and Manager, Publications. The Editor and Manager, Publications is responsible for managing Living Beyond Breast Cancer's educational print publications portfolio, as well as serving as editor of selected sections of lbbc.org, in support of the mission, programs and services of the organization.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement annual approach, content plan and implementation schedule to grow and maintain LBBC’s library of educational brochures for women with early-stage and metastatic breast cancer to support the organization’s mission to provide information and education to its constituency
  • Select appropriate medical and psychosocial content, working closely with medical professional advisors to ensure accuracy, timeliness and sensitivity
  • Oversee writing and editing of all print publications, including content, assessment of medical appropriateness, and application of style guides
  • Carry out substantive copyediting and proofreading, applying LBBC style and other styles as assigned to maintain consistent voice
  • Serve as editor for newsletters (as named), including managing the publication-specific editorial calendar and overseeing all writing, editing, design and distribution activities
  • Monitor and assess effectiveness of print publications portfolio and identify opportunities for enhancement and expansion
  • Provide copyediting, proofreading, design expertise throughout the organization
  • Propose and oversee approved budget for printed educational publications and ensure costs stay within budget
  • Train and supervise staff, volunteers and consultants to ensure appropriate staff capacity and expertise
  • Manage relationships with vendors and oversee work that provides publishing support for LBBC, including but not limited to freelance writers, designers and printers
  • Develop and maintain appropriate policies, procedures and protocols to support printed publications; apply previously developed policies, procedures and protocols to assigned sections of lbbc.org
  • Attend and assist staff at LBBC educational programs and fundraising events as requested and represent LBBC at regional/national conferences and meetings as requested

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s  degree in relevant field
  • Three years of experience in copyediting or writing for consumer audiences about health, medical or science topics
  • Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Experience with print publications and the production process
  • Strong computer application skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, planning, presentation, social media, scheduling and database programs
  • Ability to travel within the USA 

Preferred Background

  • More than five years experience in copyediting or writing for consumer audiences about health, medical or science topics
  • Solid understanding of breast cancer treatment and patient/caregiver issues, as well as relevant challenges in the U.S. healthcare system 
  • Success working in a fast-paced, mission-focused nonprofit environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team, showing both strong initiative to reach individuals goals as well as team goals
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop staff, volunteers and consultants in a nonprofit organization
  • Familiarity with public relations, marketing and communications
