The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts will hold a reception for women with metastatic breast cancer in partnership with Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

LBBC is in town for its signature education and fundraising event, Yoga on the Steps, on Sunday, October 14 at Freedom Plaza. We invite you to join the Smith Center team!

About the speakers:

Shanti Norris, executive director and co-founder of the Smith Center is Smith Center, initiated the hospital Artist-in-Residence program and Healing Arts Gallery, runs all week-long Retreats for people with cancer and oversees initiatives like Community Navigation and wellness classes. Former Vice President of Kent Homeopathic Associates, Shanti has an extensive background in complementary medicine and mind-body approaches to healing. She has taught meditation, yoga philosophy and stress reduction for more than 35 years and underwent a formal ten-year mentorship with a renowned yoga master. She is a three-term member of CARRA, the patient advocacy program at the National Cancer Institute and a graduate of Project LEAD from the National Breast Cancer Coalition. She is a graduate of the Georgetown University Non-profit Leadership certificate course and the James P. Shannon Leadership Institute in Minneapolis and St Paul, Minn. Shanti is a former board member of the Society for the Arts in Healthcare and Chaired their Annual Conference in 2004. She is a founding board member of The Art Connection in the Capital Region and a founding member of Arts in Healthcare Advocates (AHA). She is a frequent speaker on the healing power of the arts. Her formal art training began at New York University and The Cooper Union in New York City, and includes running the fine art studio of artist Peter Max. She is a member of ArtTable, the mother of three adult children and is a painter and sculptor.

Rev. Manjula Spears, E- RYT 500, has been a trainer for Integral Yoga’s intermediate and advanced teacher training programs for many years. In addition to certifications in all levels of Hatha Yoga, pranayama, and meditation she has a deep interest and extensive training in Yoga therapeutics. Rev. Manjula is a long-time student of Ayurveda. She studies and teaches sound as healing. She is an accomplished instructor in the field of Yoga therapy and is the principle teacher of the Therapeutic Yoga program at Athens Regional Medical Center specializing in restoration of functional mobility, reduction of musculoskeletal pain and joint health. For the past 10 years, Manjula has had a special interest in working with women facing the challenge of breast cancer. This interest has motivated her to create a thriving program at ARMC’s Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.
