Our plenary speakers for the 2011 conference were Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, PhD, RD, professor of nutrition sciences at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, who discussed how fitness and nutrition impact treatment, recovery and life beyond breast cancer, and Emmy award-winning journalist Lu Ann Cahn, who spoke about her own journey through breast cancer.
Opening Plenary Session - Food and Fitness During and After Breast Cancer - Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, PhD, RD
Our opening plenary session covered the latest research on reducing overall risk of recurrence and maintaining optimum health after breast cancer. Dr. Demark-Wahnefried discussed specific issues, like bone health, impacted by diet and fitness. She also talked about practical short-term and long-term lifestyle strategies for incorporating a healthy diet and exercise plan into each day, improving your overall quality of life.
Closing Plenary Session - Living Beyond Breast Cancer: A Talk with Lu Ann Cahn - Lu Ann Cahn
Diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 1991, Lu Ann shared her journey through breast cancer, what changed in her life because of her diagnosis and how she has changed because of it. This inspiring and hopeful message came from the perspective of 20-year survivorship.

Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, PhD, RD, is associate director for cancer prevention and control with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as a professor of nutrition sciences. Her training includes a background in biochemistry, genetics and behavioral science, and she has conducted some of the largest studies exploring metabolic and body composition changes in response to cancer treatment. Dr. Demark-Wahnefried has had particular success looking at how home-based lifestyle changes improve the diet and exercise behaviors of people affected by cancer.
Lu Ann Cahn is an eight-time Emmy award-winning journalist who joined Philadelphia NBC 10 News in 1987. Challenged by breast cancer at the age of 35, she has worked to heighten awareness around the importance of self-examination and mammography testing. Cahn has actively campaigned for additional funding to benefit breast cancer research and testing and serves on the board of the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the advisory board of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
