Arin Ahlum Hanson, MPH, CHES, Manager, Young Women’s Initiative

Arin manages LBBC's Young Women’s Initiative and oversees the research, evaluation, development and execution of educational programs related to premenopausal women diagnosed with breast cancer. Arin will be implementing a needs assessment of young women affected by breast cancer and using the results to develop evidence-based programming for this community.

The initiative is funded through a federal grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and will serve all young women affected by breast cancer as well asunderserved and ethnic communities.

“Since the average age of diagnosis is 63 years old, the majority of resources are designed for women over age 50. I’m excited to spearhead this initiative, which will ultimately increase our understanding of the needs of young women and develop useful and relevant resources for them,” Arin says.

Previously, Arin worked for over two years as LBBC’s Education and Outreach Coordinator. In that position, Arin managed the rewrite and redesign for the second edition of LBBC’s booklet Getting Connected: African-Americans Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

Arin received her bachelor's degree in peace and global studies and women's studies from Earlham College and her master's degree in public health in health behavior and health education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. Arin has more than eight years of experience developing, implementing, and evaluating community outreach programs, as well as conducing community health assessments in disadvantaged communities. Her prior work history includes conducting educational programs for young adults and assisting with health-related research.

Originally from rural Maryland, Arin now lives in the Walnut Hill neighborhood of West Philadelphia. She loves cooking for friends and family and is also learning how to garden, but she is currently spending a lot of time battling the neighborhood cats and squirrels that enjoy digging up her seeds.
