Joanne Mika Hayashi was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents are from Japan and she reads, speaks, and writes Japanese fluently. Last year, at the age of 33, she was diagnosed with stage III triple-negative breast cancer.
Joanne had neoadjuvant chemotherapy, opted for a lumpectomy, and just completed radiation therapy in August 2016. Although there are several support groups that she attends, she’s had difficulty finding others to connect with close to her age. She is passionate about being a Community Connector because the LBBC online resources were very helpful for her throughout her treatment and she wants to help spread the word to others in her community.
Joanne loves traveling, cooking, and trying new foods. She lives with her cat, husband, parents, sister, brother-in-law, and niece... it's a lot of people to cook for, she says, “but I like the challenge of finding healthy recipes that everyone can eat (my sister is currently pregnant and very picky!).”
