Sophia K-Franklin discovered a lump while she was 6 months pregnant in 1998. Once her daughter was born, she had breast cancer surgeries and started chemotherapy. Sophia received services from the American Cancer Society and joined the local breast cancer support groups, Gilda's Club and SHARE.
She also founded a team, Sophia's Our Choice, to raise funds for Revlon Run/Walk for Women, Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Soceity's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Sophia speaks at local breast cancer events and became a Pink Ambassador for her local hospital. She is also a Ford Warrior in Pink, Model of Courage spokesperson. She speaks to groups about early detection and getting mammograms. She also was featured in a documentary about receiving a mammogram.
