Borges, MD is the deputy head of the division of medical oncology and the Robert F. & Patricia Young Endowed Chair in Young Women’s Breast Cancer Research at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She established the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Translational Program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center in 2004 and leads a dynamic team of physicians, scientists and staff devoted to the unique needs of young women diagnosed with breast cancer. In addition to specialized clinical care, The YWBCTP is a translational research group committed to ending the increased risk of death for young women with breast cancer. They specifically focus on the relationship between pregnancy and the aggressive nature of breast cancers that are diagnosed in the years following the birth of a child. This program has identified the magnitude of risk for young mothers with breast cancer and novel targets unique to the postpartum setting against which improved therapies are now under study. In addition to improving the cure rates of young women diagnosed with breast cancer, the program is driving towards a strategy to prevent postpartum breast cancer.
