Hundreds Unite on Art Museum Steps to Experience Healing Benefits of Yoga, Support Women Affected by Breast Cancer

6th annual outdoor yoga class and Healthy Living Expo will combine healing with fundraising for LBBC’s education and support programs

By Anna Shaffer, LBBC Staff

Live beyond through Yoga Unites! On Sunday, May 18, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., help raise funds and awareness for LBBC’s education and support programs at the 6th Annual Yoga Unites for Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

Located on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art—one of our city’s greatest landmarks—this half-day event includes a basic, outdoor yoga class set against the Philadelphia skyline and a Healthy Living Expo. It provides a way for you to join individuals and teams of all ages and walks of life in supporting women affected by breast cancer while experiencing the healing effects of yoga. Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 to help us continue to provide breast cancer education and outreach programs at no cost.

About Yoga Unites for Living Beyond Breast Cancer

Our program will begin with a yoga class suitable for people of all ages and skill levels led by instructor Jennifer Schelter. During the class, the musical group Samadhi Kirtan will perform Kirtan chanting, one of the oldest musical traditions, which calls upon sacred energies to quiet the mind, remove obstacles and bring you back to the center of your being.

Afterward, enjoy a light breakfast and live entertainment while browsing our Healthy Living Expo featuring yoga and fitness studios, healthful foods, natural cosmetics and information you can use to make good choices about your mind and body. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and the outdoor yoga class is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Why Yoga?

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice that can help achieve a sense of well-being by strengthening and energizing the body, reducing stress and stimulating mental clarity.

Studies have shown that yoga may enhance overall health, which aligns with LBBC’s mission of empowering all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life. In 2006, the American Society of Clinical Oncology released study data linking yoga with increased quality of life for women with early breast cancer. In 2007, clinical trials at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center found that women who practiced yoga during the period they received radiation therapy experienced increased physical functioning, better general health, improved social functioning, lower levels of sleep-related problems and lower levels of overall fatigue.

Yoga can be performed by people of any age or physical condition—no prior experience is necessary.
