Insight, Winter 2018/2019
In our final issue of Insight (Winter 2018/2019), we lead with “Challenges Treating Older Adults With Breast Cancer,” a look at how treatment differs for older people and ways to get the best care. We spoke with Rachel Freedman, MD, MPH, from Dana-Faber Cancer Institute in Boston and Arti Hurria, MD, director for Cancer and Aging at City of Hope National Medical Center in Los Angeles, about the decisions that go into treating older adults, why research shows less about this group, and how to speak with your doctor to get care that is appropriate for you.
Inside you will find “Using Acupuncture to Help Treat Side Effects,” which explores this complementary therapy for people getting breast cancer treatment. LBBC spoke with Lorenzo Cohen, PhD, director of the integrative medicine program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and Dawn Hershman, MD, MS, leader of a recent trial on acupuncture to treat joint pain from hormonal therapy and head of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center’s breast cancer program at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center in New York. The experts spoke about the state of research on acupuncture and why the therapy can be helpful. We also spoke to women who tried acupuncture about their experiences.
A profile of Donna Noce Colaco and her husband Frank Colaco, longtime supporters of LBBC, explores how they got involved and why they have continued to work with LBBC over the years.
