Sherry Altschuler, PhD

Sherry L. Altschuler, PhD, is a retired speech pathologist and former owner/director of Preferred Rehab, Inc., a rehabilitation company that provided in-home physical, occupational and speech therapy to home-bound adults.

Sherry was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer in April 2013, four months after a normal mammogram. She had a double mastectomy with lymph node removal and placement of reconstruction expanders in June 2013.

During the two months between her diagnosis and surgery, Sherry became anxious and depressed. Her oncologist referred her to a psychiatrist who prescribed medicine to help. She took the medicine for several months, until she felt she could handle her feelings well enough without them. The breast reconstruction process carried its own set of emotional issues that Sherry believes were not unique to her situation.

Sherry is a mother and grandmother, and an avid golfer and community activist.
