Lillie D. Shockney, RN, BS, MAS, HON-ONN-CG, is a registered nurse, a professor in the departments of surgery and gynecology, and a university distinguished service professor of breast cancer at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Shockney previously served as administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center and director of the Johns Hopkins Cancer Survivorship Programs. Her career reflects a deep commitment to transforming how people experience cancer care, from diagnosis through survivorship and beyond.
A pioneer in oncology navigation and survivorship, Shockney co-founded the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) in 2009 and the Association of Chronic & Complex Care Nurse Navigators in 2021. She is also the co-creator and medical advisor of the Johns Hopkins Managing Cancer at Work program, a benefit developed at Johns Hopkins and now implemented nationally. From 2012 to 2023, she served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Oncology Navigation and Survivorship.
A two-time breast cancer survivor, Shockney has dedicated more than four decades to improving patient-centered cancer care, survivorship, end-of-life planning, and quality of life for people with metastatic breast cancer. She has also served as a consultant for ABC News and Good Morning America, and is regularly sought by the Today Show and CNN for her expertise. She is the author of 30 books, more than 350 articles, and 30 book chapters, and currently serves on 18 medical advisory boards. She has been recognized with 62 awards, including induction into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame, the Johnson & Johnson “Most Amazing Nurse in America” award, and multiple lifetime achievement honors. In 2008, she became the first nurse in Johns Hopkins history—and the only nurse in the country—to be appointed to a distinguished service faculty chair in the School of Medicine.
Her life’s work was featured in the 2023 PBS documentary Lillie Shockney: Breakthrough Women in Science and Medicine. She often reminds others that she never forgets where she came from—she will always be “a farmer’s daughter.”
