The Inauguration of our new President has caused me to reflect on Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s role in the country’s next chapter. How do we – an organization focused on offering trusted information and a community of support – further a vision deeply grounded in science when our society remains divided about its value? How do we achieve our vision of serving all people impacted by breast cancer?

The first days of 2021 have been dark ones. The insurrection on the nation’s capital shook us to our core. It was heartbreaking to see this display of hate and destruction broadcast across the country and around the world. It was a visualization of the unequal society we have built.

If nothing else, the riot reminds us to double down on the commitments we have already made: to deeply examine ourselves, inside and out, to ensure we are properly serving our diverse breast cancer community; to rely on an evidence base to improve public health and welfare; and to persist in lifting up the next generation of advocates as the committed, compassionate, and peaceful force they are. We will continue to question ourselves and our past choices, while remembering Dr. Martin Luther King’s words: “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.”

In the days and months after Inauguration, we will continue to proudly support the science and the activism that will get us to our vision: a world where no one impacted by breast cancer feels uninformed or alone. To achieve advancements in research to find treatments and cures for breast cancer, we need a society that supports science and practices active empathy for all people. We need to ensure all voices are included, so that all may be served.
